Shohei Juku Aikido Canada & Gibsons

Shohei Juku Aikido Canada was established to promote the art of Aikido as practiced by Morito Suganuma Sensei (Aikikai 8th dan). Shohei Juku Aikido Canada represents the Canadian branch of Suganuma Sensei's organization which is based in Fukuoka, Japan. In addition to offering Aikido classes to all levels of interested students, the main dojo hosts a yearly seminar with Suganuma Sensei in Vancouver.

Shohei Juku Aikido Gibsons operates under the leadership of Ria and Russ Qureshi with the guidance of Tama Nakashimada Sensei. Grounded in the basics with a joyful and intense training atmosphere the Gibsons dojo provides a non judgmental and safe environment in which to walk a martial path of self realization.

Russ and Ria Qureshi began their aikido training with Tama Nakashimada Sensei in 1993. During their training they have been responsible for children's classes, adult classes and have achieved the rank of sandan (third degree black belt). They continue to supplement their training with regular visits to the Vancouver dojo and attendance at the bi-annual seminars held there. Russ and Ria welcome anyone interested in aikido to train with them.

Tama Nakashimada Sensei

Tamami Nakashimada Sensei began her Aikido training with Morito Suganuma Shihan at the Shohei Juku dojo in Fukuoka, Japan in 1978. She arrived in Canada in 1985 and became the Chief Instructor of Shohei Juku Aikido Canada. Nakashimada Sensei currently holds the rank of 5th degree black belt. She has continued her Aikido studies under the direction of Suganuma Sensei who visits the Vancouver dojo each year. Nakashimada Sensei is an inspiring and energetic teacher.

Suganuma Sensei

Morito Suganuma Shihan, Aikikai 8th Dan, is the founder and chief instructor of Shohei Juku Dojo in Fukuoka, Japan and its 80 branch dojo. He was born in 1942 in Fukushima, Japan. He attended Juntendo University in 1962 and in the following year he attended Asia University. It was here that he was first introduced to Aikido and trained under Nobuyoshi Tamura Shihan. After graduation from university in 1967, he became the last Uchi-deshi (live-in student) of the Founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba, until the latter's death in 1969. In 1970, Suganuma Sensei was sent by the late Doshu Kisshomaru Ueshiba to Fukuoka as the shihan in charge of the Kyushu district. Currently, Suganuma Sensei conducts Aikido seminars all over the world. His other interests include calligraphy, Zen meditation and Yoga. The Chief Instructor of Shohei Juku Aikido Canada, Tamami Nakashimada Sensei, is a direct student of Suganuma Sensei.
